It happened slowly, then all at once. When we first revealed the pantry, we barely lived in the house, and I had no idea how much I’d cook or entertain here. Turns out it’s a lot (which is wonderful), and therefore the needs of “the hardest working room” expanded quickly (and messily). It is not only a dumping ground for school stuff (piles of notebooks) or hiding quick mess during parties, but Brian and I have become quite the collectors of counter appliances that we actually use. And while putting them on the stairs down to the basement seemed like a fine idea at first (“we barely use this!” we said), not when you actually use it 1-2 times a week. So slowly, I’ve removed the pretty things to make room for what we need – food, my ever-growing supplement library, and appliances.

Styled – 2023

When I saw this shot recently as the opener to a blog post about staying organized, even I was like, “Whoa, this is not a real person’s pantry”. But at the time (3 years ago), we didn’t have the inventory we have now. First, the tall oils needed a home, then the bags of vitamins, then the larger platters and bowls we pull out for most parties. Every few months, I would reorganize (always so messy) and take pretty but rarely used stuff out to the prop garage, making room for actual life.

Real Life – 2026

TOP SHELF: Let me walk you through the changes. Top left is random stuff (including some Brez, which I order online – a 2.5 mg THC drink that is a great weekend wine replacement and super light), then all my protein, creatine, and Gruns vitamins (spoiler, some kids love these, mine do not, but I like them). My slow cooker (love), and platters we pull for parties.
LOWER SHELF: Peanut butters/honey/syrup, dog treats, panini press (kids love these sandwiches), basket for some treats out of reach of kids. Then the air fryer (weeknight chicken strips), which we can plug in below and not even move it down, and the Instant Pot (weekly hard-boiled eggs).
COUNTER: We try to keep this as clear as possible. It has our house alarm keypad, a couple of cutting boards, our bread box (which indeed has our bagels and bread in it), and our $18 toaster that could probably use an upgrade, but we’ll use it til it breaks.

What We Didn’t Change: Three Years Ago

This wall has remained very similar to how we styled it originally, mostly because it’s a sightline that you see from entering the house and while in the kitchen, so it has to look really pretty, or it would bum me out on a daily basis. I love our decanted jars (and for the most part keep up with them). Naturally, the pretty apron and broom were crowded out by the one billion coats that you need in Oregon. Here’s what it looks like now:

I obviously needed a place for that incredible vintage still life painting of pears and figs (on that red and white tablecloth? SHUT UP). That pitcher full of pretty wood spoons is for my own visual pleasure, which I’m comfortable with admitting in public 🙂 I added more jars of decanted beans and lentils (hot tip: keep the bag folded up inside of it so you know what it is and how to make it), and then there are more bowls and cookbooks as I add to my collection.

This is the exact sight line from the kitchen door where almost everyone enters through our house, so while the walls on the left and right can be totally disgusting, the back wall has to remain clean and pretty (Or I need to put a door on this room, which is not on my five-year plan).

What About The Drawers??

These drawers look far more real than they did. I originally designed them to have that gap so that we could put potatoes and onions in them, or just have them easy to access. But it’s just bags of popcorn and chips. The gap doesn’t bother me, but would I do it again? Dunno. This is the first time I’ve thought about it 🙂

Coffee Bar Side – Styled 3 Years Ago

Now good news is that while I haven’t used one scoop of that fancy ass tea I bought to style out this shoot, this side is pretty much the same. Sure, we have more to-go coffees and the plant is now dead (RIP), but it’s almost exactly the same (sorry, we didn’t re-shoot it).

A quick shout-out to the hidden cheap microwave – if you are designing a kitchen soon, I highly suggest this instead of something more built-in. I’ve heard too many stories about the microwave breaking, and then what? This allows us to have a mediocre microwave that works just fine (mostly to reheat coffee and make popcorn).

While there are some rooms I do like to keep looking pretty, this one just stopped making sense, and once I started the transformation, I let her rip. It’s wildly more functional (especially using the appliances actually in the pantry and not even needing to bring them out). I suppose a door on this pantry would make a massive difference, but I know what would happen – I would use it even more as a dumping ground when people come over, a “don’t even look in here” room of shame. 🙂

We thought that it was only right to have our first official post of the year be one of the most beloved…our annual kitchen trends post. I’m getting chills as I type these words! It’s a new year, a renewed sense that things can be better and hopefully more beautiful. And for some of you lucky readers, a bit of that beauty may be coming from a kitchen remodel or even a light refresh. That’s where this post can actually be helpful. Though, if you are simply looking for general design news, that’s just as valid:) Everyone is welcome. I also feel inclined to say that while this is labeled as a “trend post,” we focus on design ideas that we love and don’t think will be “out” in a few years. Plus, regardless of how “2026” something may be, if it’s done well, it will look awesome forever. So without further ado, welcome to EHD’s 2026 Kitchen Trends Picks…

Stainless Steel Kitchens (And Accents)

We have talked about this one in the past, but now more than ever, I am CONVINCED we will see stainless steel kitchens everywhere this year and beyond. And as you can see above and below, these kitchens are not cold, sterile designs. They are chic, fresh, and mixed with beautiful materials. I mean, burlwood walls, matte stainless steel cabinets, and marble tiled checkered floors??! Not to mention that incredible chandelier, which may be a new goal for my kitchen. LA.M Studio created such a stunning space.

This unreal kitchen by Keep Studio completely flips the “hide your appliances” on its head and takes it a step further. All of the appliances are stainless steel, which then match all of the stainless steel drawers. The mix of cool-toned wood and steel feels both unique and effortless. It’s impossible for this design not to crack open your brain and think of the possibilities of incorporating stainless steel in really unexpected ways.

Here’s another angle and a closer look at that incredible window. Wow, wow, wow. I also adore the curve of the corner cabinet and how it talks to the curve of the wall and high shelf.

Now, the great Sophie Rowell whose designs are cozy, unexpected, a little traditional yet playful, designed this wonderful kitchen above. She didn’t lean hard into the stainless steel vibe but did add that awesome modern backsplash. It adds a juicy amount of contrast to the overall style of the space, but also balances with the appliances. Maybe an additional “kitchen trend” is that stainless steel appliances are back!

This kitchen, which belonged to stylist Colin King, is now The Loft, Beni Rugs’ new space. The stainless steel really just comes in with the sink and appliances, but it shows how truly elevated and cozy it can look in a kitchen with the right materials designed with it. All that wood paneling is a beautiful contrast.

Tiled Cabana Stripes

This one may feel a little risky for some, but in the right home with the right design, it’s everything! Case in point, Leah Bradley’s California coastal home. Without the stripe pattern, this is a beautiful, very neutral kitchen. But WITH the tile, a bold yet soft injection of energy is instantly felt.

Color and tone are major factors in this design working. The soft colors not only flow with the tones of the rest of the kitchen but also with the vibe of the area. Coastal, beachy, and fun. This was a risk that couldn’t have paid off more.

I LOVE this kitchen. I also know I’m stretching it a little with the definition of cabana stripes, but it’s what I immediately thought when I saw this photo. I also love that you still get the impact of the look without needing to go for longer stripes.

So, as opposed to the lighter colors with long stripes of the first kitchen, here, White Studio & Co Interior Design used darker colors with a “short stripe” (or so that’s how it feels to me:)). Oh, and did you notice the stainless steel sink and chrome stools??

Another one for the short stripes! I love this small but massively impactful design choice Abbie Naber made in this kitchen. It just takes it to the next level visually. It’s also a great reminder that tile accents can be taken into dining spaces, especially in an open concept.

Here’s a closer look at the detailing on the island. It’s not a classic, two solid colored tile combo. See that little diagonal? Just so special.

Now, look at this kitchen render! That short backsplash is another great way to have that pop of pattern, even if you don’t want to go all the way up the wall. It’s so cool and fresh, and with that blue cabinet and shelf, I couldn’t love it more. Also, while this isn’t a completed, photographed space, I do think renders are a VERY good indicator of trends. It’s what designers are imagining in their ideal scenario:)

I had to include this one because it was a different take and looks beautiful. Vaughan Design & Development designed a perfect kitchen and then made it even better with that horizontal stripe on the backsplash. What makes it great (and all of these stripes in this section) is that they are made with larger tiles and not those mini ones (you know which ones I mean). These are intentional and special, and I’m excited to see more of them this year!

Tonal Wood Hardware

Tonal wood hardware is making itself known, even if it matches perfectly with the wood cabinets:) Workstead can do no wrong in my book, and this kitchen is yet another example. There are a million details I love, but a big one is those round wood knobs. So simple but (say it with me), so special.

See?! It doesn’t hurt that the wood is insanely gorgeous.

I believe there has yet to be a January kitchen trends post (at least that I have done) that hasn’t included Shapeless Studio. Their work is, well, always inspiring, and these wooden custom-designed handles are just that. White oak, like the cabinets, and strong enough to be appliance pulls too!

Want to know a really fun fact? Those wood cabinets you’re looking at are actually covered with contact paper! Drew is an unbelievably designer/DIYer, so no shock that it turned out beautiful. But what I also loved was that he used real wood DIY handles to really sell the whole “real” wood look.

So this kitchen went from a bit cold and without a ton of personality to a beautiful, warm, renter-friendly dream. The wood on wood look really takes the space to a very elevated level:)

I also think this is a trend that’s extremely possible to easily incorporate into your existing wood cabinet kitchen. No reno necessary! Just find the right wood match hardware, and you are set.

Flat Panel Cabinet Fronts

Shaker and micro Shaker cabinet fronts have been king for years now, but I think that flat panels are about to officially take over. That’s not to say we still don’t LOVE shakers and think they are beautiful (because they are). But baby, things are shifting. Let’s take this unreal kitchen by Katy Popple Design. Flat panel fronts with a mix of really awesome hardware. It’s clean, lets the materials and colors shine, and feels modern in the best way. Actually, if you look at all of the kitchens in this post, almost all of them have flat panel cabinet fronts. Jussssst saying.

Here is another dream kitchen by Rebecca Zajac that’s more modern organic, and those flat fronts are perfect. It’s so clean to the eye and lets the materials really sing. I mean that stone is unreal!

…and another. But this example shows a more modern traditional look (love the two tones!). It’s also proof that Shaker isn’t the only “traditional” option.

For my final example in this category, this one offers a slight twist. From what I’ve seen, most flat fronts are flush to the framing. The wood ones in this space are slightly set back, which I also love. A teeny detail that makes them a little different from the stainless steel ones. Intentional and interesting. No notes, this kitchen by Monika Michalowska is perfect.

Creamy Tiles

Another designer that I always look to for trends, Nina Farmer. Her style is so classic, but is always special and layered. So much soul in every space. But with this space, we are focusing our attention on those creamy wall tiles. We love an all-bright-white in the right space, but the softness of a cream or warm beige is like a hug for the eyes. This kitchen feels just like that – warm, beautiful, and just the right amount of color.

Now, the great Mandy Cheng used very similar, if not the same, Zellige tiles as Nina, and it’s just as warm but in a completely different way. The power of design!! Along with the live-edge wood shelves, the tiles soften the white cabinets, stainless steel accents (another example!), and the black stone island.

It’s that seemingly small choice of choosing white versus cream/beige that can make the biggest impact.

While Zellige is still one of the major players in home tile, this cream-toned brick that Ome Dezin chose for this kitchen is so awesome. Almost a warm brutalism style that’s warmed up even more by that unreal dark cabinetry and modern island. Their work is always so exciting and beautiful.

Green Countertops

It can feel a little strange using our own work in a trend post, but hey, green stone countertops are absolutely going to be a major player in 2026. I mean, it’s already happening! Choosing a colorful stone can feel like a huge risk because stone and fabrication aren’t cheap (or returnable). But green is a color that’s also more or less a neutral depending on the tone chosen. It goes with so much and is visually calming. Would this kitchen have been pretty with a white stone? Yes. Is it far more interesting and beautiful with the green? I think, YES.

Here is a render by Finch studio that I really love. It’s very modern, and at first glance, the blue tiled island is what you notice. But then your eyes move to the green countertop, and it’s a wow. So interesting but quiet, and that light green with the mid-toned warm wood is perfection.

Or go for a tonal style like the great Heidi Caillier chose to do. I just love the green on green look.

There was a debate on whether Rosso Levanto marble(red marble) was on trend, and I couldn’t find it in enough kitchens. I absolutely think yes for smaller areas like bathrooms and pieces of furniture like accent tables, but for kitchens, I’m not totally convinced yet. I feel sure about green, but will happily be wrong for red:) I guess only time will tell. Oh, and we’re definitely keeping our eyes on butler pantries, too. We’ll check back in for our midyear kitchen trends report.

Two years ago, right around this time, I revealed my rental kitchen refresh. During the months that preceded that, I chronicled my journey in getting from “before” to “after,” and one of the major overhauls was of my appliances. When my family moved in, we had a partially broken white electric-coil range, a black (and ancient) dishwasher, and a very small, apartment-style fridge, also in white. It was a mishmash of finishes and not a single one of those appliances suited our needs.

It took me nearly a full year to hunt down new-to-me, secondhand kitchen appliances in my budget, but I finally did. The biggest get was my refrigerator, mostly because I had very specific limits, including needing a counter-depth model. Not just that, but the way our countertops were cut with a slight overhang in the area where the fridge lived meant we couldn’t accommodate a standard 36-inch width model either. We needed a counter-depth fridge.

Here’s a little excerpt from my kitchen reveal about this process:

“Let me tell you…finding a 33-inch fridge in counter-depth (this space required that) was near IMPOSSIBLE. I’m not exaggerating when I say they make three models that fit that bill. ON THE ENTIRE MARKET. And then to try to find one of those secondhand, well, Everest territory. BUT I DID IT. And the rush of exhilaration I felt is what I imagine stockbrokers feel when they do stockbroker things that make them a lot of money. I love our fridge…it makes me quite happy every day.”

So, here I am, 700-plus days later…do I still love it? Am I still quite happy every day? Well, mostly, though it’s complicated. And that’s what I’m here to talk about today.

What Is A Counter-Depth Fridge, & Why Does Someone Need (Or Want) One?

A counter-depth refrigerator is exactly what it sounds like: A fridge that is about as deep as a standard kitchen countertop, which typically ranges between 24 and 30 inches, while a standard depth fridge can be anywhere from 30 to 36 inches deep and extend past the countertops. So, why exactly does it matter, and why did I personally choose to go with counter-depth? Glad you asked.

I grew up in homes where there was a built-in cabinet box that accommodated a standard-depth refrigerator. That looks like this:

Our fridges sat nicely inside a frame made for their depth, with upper cabinetry that also extended out further than the rest of the uppers. We had a decent amount of space to move around the fridge, as well. Some people (or mainly, designers) don’t love this because it breaks from having a seamless line. You can see that in the above photo. It certainly doesn’t look bad when done well, in my opinion, but it’s become the norm lately to have a fridge, especially when integrated/panel-ready, that is flush with countertops and lower cabinetry.

A way around this, if you care, is to have your fridge on its own wall built into floor-to-ceiling cupboards without counter space, such as this:

None of these, of course, was my scenario. I was not renovating a custom kitchen. I was merely hoping to get my rental kitchen—where I spend a massive amount of time cooking, eating, or cleaning up—looking less “bargain basement bin” and more “nice family home.” As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I was working around some limitations in terms of width, and after measuring, I realized that a standard-depth would stick out almost 10 inches past my countertops. In a tight U-shaped kitchen such as mine, an appliance that projects that far into the center space is both an eyesore but also cuts off physical and visual flow. I know I would have to be searching for something counter-depth due to the placement of where my fridge was in the floor plan.

My Fridge Specs, Where I Bought It & What I Paid For It

This post isn’t meant to be some kind of ringing endorsement for the refrigerator we ended up getting, but I wanted to include it in case it was useful to anyone, and also because I wanted to show how much of a difference a few inches in depth can make to the interior of a fridge. Here is the model I ended up buying (reminder: I bought mine used on Facebook Marketplace for around $600).

Below is the same fridge, but instead of being 31 inches deep, it’s 37.5 inches deep. (Keep in mind that the fridge itself is 36 inches, but the final dimensions include the handles, as well.) A six-inch difference equates to nearly six cubic feet of difference. That, my friends, is a lot of space inside a fridge. Also, note that the smaller counter-depth model is $100 more expensive than the regular fridge. From what I understand, that increase in price is mostly due in part to supply and demand (they simply make fewer counter-depth fridges than standard depth), but also because the cost to produce them is higher.

These are important things to keep in mind if you are considering something counter-depth, but more on my personal experience with the diminished space, in particular, below. Keep reading!

My Honest Thoughts, 2 Years Later.

There are a lot of pros about our fridge, but also some cons. Let’s start with the positives, because I’m an optimist.

Pros:

• It fits! Above and beyond, that was my number one priority, obviously.
• It doesn’t stick out an additional six inches into my already tight kitchen!
• Aside from the aesthetics of its size, by far the most convenient part about a counter-depth fridge is that, because it isn’t as deep, food doesn’t get lost in the caverns of your chiller. Playing jar Jenga is wildly overstimulating to me, pulling pickles, pasta sauce, and relish out of the way just to get to the kalamata olives alllll the way in the back. My fridge has the capacity to nest things only two to three times before you hit the back wall. To some, this might be a con, because it limits storage, but to someone like me, who often has containers of leftovers to contend with (and needs constant reminders that yes, I have food at home), it limits food waste significantly.

From where I was coming (the basic top-freezer model loved by landlords for its price tag), the fridge is a huge upgrade, whether it was counter depth or not. A lot of what I loved about it to begin with can be attributed to this, as well as the French-door design. I loved having easy access to all the space on the interior side of the door, the wide deli drawer, and adjustable shelves.

Cons:

• Fewer model options to choose from. This was one of my biggest challenges, especially because I needed both a counter depth as well as only 33 inches in width (36 inches in width and depth is standard). These are becoming more popular, thankfully, so supply increases as does demand.
• They are more expensive, as I already mentioned.
• Decreased cubic storage. You can also expect a counter-depth refrigerator to have a capacity of anywhere from 17 to 25 cubic feet (LG makes some with really maximized interiors), with an average of around 22 cubic feet. A standard refrigerator houses around 20 to 30 cubic feet, depending on style, model, and width.

Now that I’ve lived with this fridge in this size for over two years, I can say that I have been frustrated at times with simply not having enough room. We are a family of two adults and one young child, and it’s barely enough room for all my groceries. I usually go shopping for the week and shove things in with a hope and a prayer. Granted, I buy enough groceries to cover breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for at least six days’ worth of eating. Plus, we keep our large water pitcher in there because there is no water line to that side of the kitchen, so the water dispenser doesn’t work, and I need cold water to survive. If you’re the type of person who only buys groceries for a few meals a week, there’s only one or two of you, or you’re more minimal than I am in terms of your condiments, milks/drinks, or produce, it may be just fine for you.

In a future kitchen of my choosing, this size will simply not cut it for my cooking style. I’m sure it would feel better in a full 36-inch width, but even then, even with the “pro” of not losing food in the back of the fridge and having things more accessible, I’d probably choose the largest fridge I could find as long as it made sense for the footprint of my space.

Welcome to my brother’s new River House modern kitchen reveal. She is open, minimal, textural, and hyper-functional for their family of four. We LOVE how it turned out, and when you walk through the house, it flows so well with the design as a whole. The colors, textures, and minimalism keep everything calm while the styling and furniture pop. Let’s give you a tour (and see the family in action).

Now this kitchen was a design collaboration (like the rest of the house) between myself (I’m the sister), Max Humphrey (local designer), and Anne Usher (architect). My job was to be involved where there were partners – the tile, plumbing, and lighting, which meant that I was pretty hands-off with appliances and cabinetry. But this was a clunky way to do it because everything affects everything, design-wise, and you can’t have different chefs making different entrees for the same meal. That’s all to say that Max and Anne deserve a lot of credit for the layout, overall flow (Annie killed it), and some of the hard finishes. I took over with some of the other elements (and all the styling, stone, hardware, and lighting). Heck, maybe this collaboration worked because it turned out pretty darn great. At a certain point, I became so emotionally invested that, despite not being a “hired designer,” I wanted to see every room through to the end since it was such a huge part of my life for so many years.

The kitchen lives in the middle of the first floor, open to the living/family room, dining room, and game room. So choosing the hard finishes required us to see the design as a whole to make sure that we weren’t designing a fun house.

On Choosing Tile…

Runner | Drawer Pulls | Cabinet Latch | Tile | Range

We chose this super beautiful, creamy Ann Sacks tile from the new Studio McGee line. We didn’t have the furniture locked down when we were choosing tile or stone, and Katie and Ken are pretty risk-averse when it comes to tile colors/patterns, so as you can see, the main finishes are pretty safe (if not still so beautiful). We knew from day one that they wanted a whole wall of tile to create that beautiful texture and reflection, so the overall impact is soft, quiet, and really pretty. You don’t turn the corner and scream at the boldness from color, which is good (they aren’t bold tile folk, TBH).

Also, within view, you have two huge tiled fireplaces (living and dining), so the tile really needed to work with the other choices. Now that it’s all done, I love the calm simplicity of it (especially with the green stone countertops). The ultimate vision and intent of the house remains clear – warm minimalism, with a Pacific Northwest bent.

A Non-Boring, But Still “Safe” Tile Layout

We laid out the tile in what I dubbed a “double stack stagger”, where two tiles are horizontally stacked on top of each other, but then staggered 1/2 way over two more stacked tiles (hard to explain, just see above). It was slightly more midcentury and a bit unexpected. We went through all the options (the horizontal or vertical stack or the traditional stagger/running bond), and this felt like a really great complement to the other tiled fireplaces in the room. Katie and Ken were nervous, but I felt that it was such a safe risk, so I pushed, and they agreed. We chose a really neutral grout, Platinum by Prism, that added some dimension without too much busyness (but not a bright white). I LOVE how we put it behind the hanging cabinets (which Max designed) so you can see the tile through the glass. It’s subtle but so pretty.

The Pendant Lights

I was so excited to finally use Blueprint lighting. I’ve been a fan for a while, but since my house is so vintage, it didn’t feel as right there. But this kitchen felt simple enough that adding some more sculptural pendants, almost like art, over the island was the right move. These are called the Montera pendants, which have a lot of different metal and enamel color options from both the shades and the stems. We chose Slate, which at times reads way more blue, which was the intent (other times, like in these photos, they are more gray). The black sconces over the bar are from Rejuvenation and complement the Blueprint pendants really nicely, while pulling in the hits of black we have around the kitchen.

I love how the more delicate shape of the shade contrasts against all the hard lines of the wood, and the reflection of the shiny metal pops so well off the wood. Once they were up, I actually decided that black stems and canopies would be better and ordered them to replace the gold. It felt like they were just disappearing too much. But as the room came together (and as we kept putting off calling the electrician back), we decided that these look great.

The Bar + Coffee Bar

They have a separate cabinet run for the bar (that opens to the kitchen patio) and houses their coffee situation. It also has drawer fridges and a pebble ice machine (like brother, like sister). The window is from LaCantina Doors, and I had nothing to do with it, but it’s pretty dang awesome.

As you can see, we chose unlacquered brass hardware from Rejuvenation, in handles, knobs, latches, and appliance pulls. Once again, their selection and custom options can really make your project look special. We were hoping to reduce contrast here by choosing the brass, but I think black could have looked hot, too. I just love how the brass patinas, even in a contemporary house like this.

The Brass Faucets + Purified Water

Planter | Faucet | Sink | Berry Basket

The faucet is a Purist Kohler pull-out bar faucet (in Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass) for washing veggies and for drinking water. Over here, they have the Culligan water filtration system, inside the cabinet below, that gives them extremely purified water (all the things are filtered out, including microplastics). Listen, Portland doesn’t have the best water, so I’m jealous of this and might get it for myself now (especially after all the very recent microplastic reporting). It was a super easy install for them (harder for me, as we have less clearance in our cabinets, so stay tuned on that). The faucet comes in a lot of finishes, and Kohler has so many different styles, but we thought that this one was contemporary and transitional – not hyper-modern but fit stylistically really well.

Faucet | Sink

The kitchen faucet is so gorgeous. It’s Kohler, in the same Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass finish, single-hole pull-down. It can have a regular water flow or a more shower-like spray. It’s a one-and-done faucet for those who want a lot of function in a really simple shape.

The Green Leathered Stone Countertops

Pasta Bowls | Ramen Bowls | Plates | Pasta Bowls (similar) | Glasses | Small Bowls | Wide Bowls

I wrote about the process of choosing the stone here, but with the tile being a creamy white and the cabinets being wood, I was desperate to bring in some color and something punchy. We had Caesarstone on board to trade the countertops (which is a super durable choice that Ken and Katie were excited about), but I was just so worried that without color in here, this kitchen would simply put, look boring (and I told them that). So I found this green stone from Elmar, and thankfully, they were on board (nervous, but they trusted me). It felt so perfect since the green of all the trees outside was a huge part of the interior color palette.

We had the stone leathered, which enhanced a lot of the veining and gave it more of a matte textural finish. Be warned that it needs to be sealed IMMEDIATELY afterwards because theirs wasn’t, and there was an immediate ring from a sub that no one took responsibility for, but was very expensive to remove. Not sure why it wasn’t sealed when they leathered it before it was on site, but it was one of those dumb blame game situations that is unfortunate during a remodel. And I felt so responsible because I was the one who forced natural stone on them, but you can barely see it now, thank goodness.

The counter stools are from CB2 and are pretty much perfect in here (which is why I forced them to buy them). Since you mostly stare at these stools from the back, they needed to be interesting, and that mixed leather/metal finish is just so architecturally striking (not to mention being comfortable, and family-friendly since it’s a dark fabric).

The biggest debate that we had at the beginning of the design was whether you want to face the river/view while washing dishes or eating at the island. It’s really just a personal preference. At one point, Anne even tried the sink cabinet run at the window with the kitchen island behind it, where the range wall is. Lots of opinions on this one! I LOVE how Anne ultimately designed the layout, and having spent a lot of time in the house, sitting at that dining table is just so special, and the kitchen is so close and so inviting.

Wait, Where Do You Keep The Food???

I totally forgot to mention that there is a big walk-in pantry in that hallway where they have a second small fridge, their built-in microwave and steam oven, and tons of cabinets and drawers for food. We’ll shoot it eventually, I promise 🙂 You’ll see the dining room soon. But for now, let’s get to those before and after sliders 🙂

It’s a real case for keeping hard finishes simple, and the power of styling and decorating. I can’t stress this enough – you don’t want to redo the hard finishes, but it’s so easy to switch out almost everything else based on your style shifting.

I’ll show you the living room soon, but know that you can see the TV from the kitchen, should there be a big game on – you can even cook while watching the new season of The Bachelorette that we are all VERY excited by.

It’s a super easy to live in, easy to keep clean, dreamy kitchen for this family, and I feel so lucky and grateful to be part of it (and hang out here).

Girls gotta eat, as they say. And what better than a delicious meal that’s been prepared in some keep-forever enameled cast iron cookware? You can’t go wrong with any of the above, but we particularly love these 8-quart ovens from Le Creuset, which can go from slow braises to sourdough bread to a whole roast chicken. It’s one pot that can tackle weeknight pasta sauce and a centerpiece holiday roast. (And because enamel is non-reactive, you can simmer acidic ingredients without any metallic taste leaching in. YES, CHEF!) I wouldn’t turn my nose up at this 65% off Staub version either, especially in the punchy citron hue.

Stainless Cookware

Okay, okay – I hear you. Stainless steel is less romantic than cast iron. I get it! But there’s a reason professional kitchens lean so heavily on this tried-and-true classic: they’re workhorses, plain and simple. They’re ultra-durable (scratches or dings won’t affect their performance), perfect for developing food (sorry, non-sticks, but you’ll never deliver a world-class pan sauce!, and they’re often dishwasher safe. You can’t go wrong with a set of these steel Viking cooking sheets or this budget-friendly 24 qt. stockpot. (Full disclosure: I actually grabbed the aforementioned pot for dying fabric! Anyone who says that size is easy to find in a thrift store has better luck than I do.)

Knives

Knives: the one kitchen essential you should really buy for yourself. I can’t be the only one who grew up with that old superstition around this, right? In Norse and Germanic traditions, a blade given freely could “sever” bonds of friendship. In Chinese superstition, sharp objects as gifts symbolize conflict or the cutting of ties. In some Mediterranean folklore, the idea is the same – the blade doesn’t just cut food, it cuts luck or love. WHY RISK IT?

Treat yourself to some sweet, sleek knives – like the ones Velinda has hanging above – or grab a world-class set from Henckels (the real deal, for those of us amateur chefs) for only $199, reduced from over $700. (PS. If someone buys you a knife, you can dodge the bad luck by tossing them a penny or nickel in return. It’s a common practice amongst chefs and collectors, I swear.)

Griddles

Let me set the scene: it’s winter. The holidays are around the corner. The house is clean; the family is asleep; and you rise early in the morning. It’s quiet. The birds are chirping. You walk into the kitchen – it’s being warmed by the early beams of morning light. You pull the griddle out of the cabinet, toss it on your burners, and spin up a pancake breakfast that would put your local diner to shame. That’s the dream, isn’t it? And it’s within reach, thanks to these budget-friendly griddles!

It’s not just pancakes, though – a griddle basically turns your stovetop into a mini flat-top grill. It’s ideal for cooking multiple items at once (think: smashburgers for a crowd, bacon strips lined up, grilled cheese sandwiches assembly-line style). And in the winter, they can scratch your grill itch without firing up a bunch of charcoal or propane. It’s a totally transformative piece of cookware, I swear. I’d go for this half-priced Viking edition because it’s reversible – ridged on one side, smooth on the other.

Sweet Crocks And Vessels

The humble utensil crock: or, as I call it, kitchen jewelry. (I lied. This is the first time I’ve called it that. Do you get the vision, or is it giving “stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen?”) Anyway – there’s nothing that kills the kitchen vibe faster than digging through a likely-jammed door while your dinner is threatening to boil over. Enter: the crock. Sturdy enough to hold your ladles, whisks, and spatulas; pretty enough to admire on the counter; budget-friendly enough to swap when you’re ready for a refreshed look. I love a classic stoneware version, like the timeless piece Jess used above, but you really can’t go wrong here.

Simple, Pretty Serveware

Hop in your time machine: we’re going to trace the origins of white serveware all the way back to the Tang dynasty. (Years 618–907, FYI. Saved you a Google!) Around this time, white porcelain was prized for its refinement and durability. By the time it reached Europe (1300s-1500s), it was called “white gold.” Royal courts collected it obsessively because it signified wealth and sophistication. AND NOW, WE CAN ALL JUST HAVE IT IN OUR HOUSES! White serveware is practical and functional – it works across formal dinners, casual lunches, rustic kitchens, sleek modern tables. It’s never “out of style.” And man, does it look good styled in a kitchen. You can never go wrong with a simple, sleek platter like the fruit-bearing piece above, but I’m currently hearing the siren song of this beautiful, $72 Lenox cake plate. Imagine her styled with your favorite breakfast pastries – what a treat to wake up to every morning!

Decanters

Here’s a surprising fact: for the bulk of human history, decanted goods have been the norm. Romans kept their dry goods in giant terracotta vats called dolia (thank you, 4 years of Latin!). Middle Agers kept their bread in bins and their grain in chests. Victorian pantries boasted shelves of glass jars with handwritten labels (this sounds pretty dreamy, TBH).

But with the rise of branded packaging, food could finally be left in its store-bought box or tin, yet early 20th-century housewives were often encouraged to decant staples into matching containers for neatness and “domestic pride.” I’m not crazy about that particular line of reasoning, but I still find myself drawn to our human tradition and history of decanted food. If you fall into the same boat (welcome aboard, our ship is filled with people who romanticize everything!), then a clean, pretty set of glass decanters can make mealtime prep a little more beautiful and enjoyable.

Countertop Appliances

As it turns out, kitchens often need to be stocked with – gasp! – appliances. I know that interior designers will have you convinced that every electronic must be stashed out of eyesight (I see you, purveyors of appliance garages, who have left me with lingering insecurity re: my countertop microwave), but sometimes…we just gotta have stuff on the counter, you know? It’s food. It’s life. It’s nice to have things that are easily accessible.

But it also helps when those frequently-used kitchen tools are stunners, like Sara’s KitchenAid mixer. (Fun fact: KitchenAid hired Egmont Arens – also the editor of Creative Arts and Vanity Fair – to redesign their bulky mixer in 1937. The basic profile you see above hasn’t changed since! It’s considered one of the few “perfected” industrial forms, like the Coca-Cola bottle.) And you guessed it – you can grab it on sale this weekend. (If you’re an amateur, go for an entry-level model like this. Long-time bakers, you might consider splurging on a model with a bit more power!)

Cutting Boards

One thing about us EHD folk? We’ll never turn down a good cutting board. Use them to slice your breads and veggies! (Groundbreaking reporting coming out of stylebyemilyhenderson.com today.) Gussy them up as a charcuterie board! Lean them against your backsplash! Create your own cutting board gallery wall! If you’re a serious chef, I’d highly recommend an investment in a Boos Block, like this – the company was founded in the 1800s; their boards are made from the highest quality materials and are still used in professional kitchens across the country. But if you’re just looking for a little decor spruce up, a mix-and-match set in this vein would be a great, budget-friendly jumping-off point. (PS. This tiny, 10×10″ sub-$40 cutie would make a really nice gift for your friendly neighborhood blogger. Hint hint!)

Major Appliances

Remember when “adulting” meant buying paper towels before you ran out? Major appliances are the real deal. A dishwasher that doesn’t sound like a jet engine, a fridge big enough to hold more than LaCroix, a washer/dryer that isn’t coin-op? That’s when you know you’ve arrived. And the kicker? You can grab allllllll the major appliances above for up to 40% off this weekend. (Anyone else eyeing this sub-$1,500 French door refrigerator? I mean – just think of what you can do with the savings!)

While I myself have yet to remodel a kitchen, I have been privy to many other people remodeling theirs. And especially if you don’t have a design background or a hired designer, all of the basic decisions and budget balancing can be A LOT to manage. Then all of that decision fatigue doesn’t always leave enough space for the more custom or creative things you could implement. One of those creative (and potentially, budget-friendly) decisions is mixing cabinet front styles. I’m of course not suggesting that every other door is a different style. But if you have uppers, a little cabinet nook, etc., you might be able to switch it up a little, making your kitchen that much more unique to you. Let me show you what I really mean.

Recently, I wrote about this house above and all its amazing uses of large-scale art. I did also happen to mention the mixing of cabinet front styles. The island and main cooking counter both have a thinly beaded cabinet front, while the tall cabinets (probably fridges?) on either side of the kitchen have flat panels. It’s kinda subtle until you clock it, and then it just makes the kitchen all the more interesting. This kitchen is what inspired this whole post! Here are some more examples/options if you are in the kitchen remodel idea market:)

I feel that this is the most common/classic “style mixing” combo – Shaker cabinets + flat drawer fronts. It’s classic, a little fun for the eye, and I wonder if it’s an “easy” way to save money. Flat panel cabinet fronts are generally more affordable than any of the other, more decorative options. Of course, it depends on the material you want to use:)

Next, we have this really beautiful example of painted beadboard cabinet fronts and natural wood flat panel drawer fronts. It’s in the same “traditional” world as the shaker cabinets/flat panel drawers, but a little more noticeable. It’s a really warm and inviting version of “modern traditional”.

Guess who is also a fan of a similar combo, the kitchen cabinet front lover and designer, Sarah Sherman Samuel! In two separate kitchens, she implemented this delightful beadboard and mini shaker combo. Beadboard for the upper cabinets and the mini shaker for the lower cabinets and drawers. She also played with a totally different style for the island, but that’s not what we are currently focusing on:) Also, how sweet are those little cutout holes on the uppers in the kitchen on the left? Another little idea to remind you is an option.

Another very common option is that the island cabinetry is different than the wall cabinetry. It’s also an easy way to bring in another cabinet color or wood tone…also like Em did in her farmhouse kitchen:)

Oh, I love this example. The fronts of “most” of the wall cabinets and the island are the same. But those top cabinets along the wall are so stunning and balance the whole design. The brass talks to the hardware, and the darker tones talk to the darker island. I mean, Zoe Feldman Design never misses. I doubt this “saved” any money, but it’s special and also draws your eye up.

If you are someone who wants to get a little more decorative with your fronts but are afraid of your kitchen looking “too much”, go simple on some of them like Meta did! Similar to the flat drawer/shaker cabinet combo, but instead going for plain raised panel drawers/decorative raised panel cabinet fronts.

I love the subtle mix of this one since at first you think it’s just the two-toned wall of flat panel cabinets (so beautiful), but then you look at the island (in the same wood as the wall’s lowers) and they have a modern raised panel. It’s so simple but makes this space feel so intentional and special.

Maybe you just love a singular type of front (like a flat panel), but you really mix up the hardware and color so the uppers and lowers feel very different, but still cohesive. I know a color this bold is too much for some, but wow, is it beautiful to at least just look at. The addition of that rich tiled backsplash is amazing. Such an elegant example of mixing modern and a more traditional/rustic vibe. The paneled wall cabinetry is warm yet fresh, and then that amazing modern island creates the perfect tension. However, the handles are the same, so that also blends them together effortlessly.

This post isn’t meant to put any pressure on an already high-pressure project. But if you are looking for ideas and inspiration that don’t necessarily require a super custom job, I hope this is helpful…and fun.

#1: Double Bullnose Counter Edges

I have to be honest. I’m not 100% certain that this countertop edge finish is even called a “double bull nose,” but that’s what I started calling it when I first saw it (some Google searches confirmed at least some people also call it this). Then, like learning a new word and hearing it constantly after, I’ve been seeing this absolutely nonstop ever since. It is far and away the most prevalent “trend” I’ve found in the kitchen space (as well as the bathroom) this year and as much as I mentally retreat from a concept the more I see it, I really love this detail. It feels somehow classic and modern at the same time. You can see a close-up here by Decus Interiors.

Prepare yourself because this space by Anne Mcdonald Design for Isla Porter will make another appearance in this post (keep reading), but for now, it’s here to showcase the DBN (double bull nose) edge finish fully. I think this technique works particularly well on a heavily veined stone because it creates a bit more depth in the inset middle line. At full scale (meaning, seeing a kitchen, pulled back), it’s subtle but powerful.

#2: Red Marble

This one is bold, and not for the design meek, but wow, does it make an impact. Red, pink, and burgundy marbles have been slowly edging their way into our kitchen design vernacular, and I believe it’s broken out of the fringes to be more widely accepted. Red marble comes in maybe different types, just like other marbles, and some names you may want to acquaint yourself with if you’re dreaming of adding this to a future renovation are as follows: Rosso Collemandina, Rosso Levanto, Rosso Verona, Rosso Arabescato Orobico, Rosso Peperino, Rojo Alicante…and many more (note that some of the “rosso” labeling could also be “rojo” or simply “red” depending on origin and how the store is selling it). I’ve never typed “rosso” more in my life, but it’s a good idea to study all the different kinds to learn which shades and veining types are right for you.

The one here in this beautiful kitchen by Susannah Holmberg Studios appears to be Rojo Bilbao marble, though it’s hard to tell as the image is dark. One comment on the post mentions it’s an Alicante, but that didn’t look right to me. Either way, it’s a beautiful stone color to use as an accent or throughout.

Some red marbles have a white base and red veining, such as this surface in a kitchen by new-on-the-scene custom cabinetry company Isla Porter. This one is likely either a Calacatta Viola or Calacatta Borgogna, though I’m sure someone with expertise in natural stone could tell you more accurately if you were interested in it for your own home.

This stone in a kitchen by Abhishek Dekate is similar in coloring but far more dramatic. It’s stunning with a dark-toned wood cabinetry and darker bronze accents. A thick edge lip on the counter helps show it off even more. And because it would be hard to find a tile that could compete with this, if budget allows, it simply must be brought up on the wall, too.

I’ve been in love with this kitchen by Workstead for nearly two years, having bookmarked it numerous times (basically, every time I see it), on all my inspiration hoarding platforms. It’s where I first saw a red stone and thought OMG I HAVE TO HAVE THIS ONE DAY. This is a warmer, brighter red than some of the burgundies and pinks shown above, but it really comes to life with the matching persimmon cabinetry. I’ll never tire of seeing this one.

#3: Dark Wood Cabinetry & Paneling

White oak and similar blonde woods (as well as white or painted cabinetry) have reigned supreme for well over a decade, but dark wood tones have slowly made a comeback. First in furniture, now abundantly in our kitchens. Unlike the vibrant red-toned cherry cabinets we all held on a Tuscan-inspired pedestal in the early 2000s, this dark brown wood is rich but neutral. You’ll find it both in traditional styles as well as more contemporary profiles, such as in this kitchen by Decus Interiors.

Another one above by Decus Interiors, but I wanted to show it because of the lighter floors they paired with the dark cabinets. I think these would also work well with a creamy-hued stone floor, such as limestone, or even something like slate if you get enough natural light (otherwise, it may feel cave-like).

I love a good tile moment (like LOVE), but you have to admit shiplap, tongue and groove, and beadboard sure do up the ante on the charm factor in a kitchen. To keep it more “now,” opt for a modern tone like the earthy brown in the kitchen above by The Misfit House.

Jean Stoffer is American cabinet royalty IMHO, and she and her team love leaning into the use of paneling in a kitchen to achieve that pie-cooling-on-the-window-sill vibe (but make it elevated). Here, the wood is used throughout all walls and the ceiling, though you’ll often see it just along one or two walls where you might otherwise see tile.

Beadboard painted in the same color as your cabinetry can be much more affordable than solid slab marble (not to mention lighter without needing as much reinforcement for an added shelf). Interior designer and content creator Lauren Costello revamped her 1930s Cape Cod kitchen for just over $1,000 (with no demo), including the MDF she used to cover her existing wall tile that no longer suited her aesthetic.

#5: Custom Edge Shapes On Slab Backsplashes

#6: Butter Yellow

Butter yellow has had a chokehold on cabinetry in the last year, and I am Here*For*It. It’s such a wonderful departure from all the white, cream, and green we’ve seen so much of over the past five or so years. Sherwood Kypreos used Farrow & Ball Matchstick here, which works beautifully with the red on the island and the teal floor tile for a buffet of color that still somehow feels subdued.

We first explored this beautiful kitchen by Sarah Sherman Samuel for her new paintable line for Semihandmade when we were discussing the double bull nose edge, but it’s such a perfect creamy, hand-churned butter color, it also had to go down here. It picks up the warm golden tones of the marble beautifully, and is in harmony with the stone floor.

File this one under Fun & Flirty. I love the idea of a peek-a-boo bold color inside a cabinet or drawer. It’s likely most impactful in one or two areas, say, in an appliance garage or a coffee bar. The electric blue in this kitchen by Himlekök is a perfect complement to the terracotta cabinetry.

#8: Sculleries

I first encountered the term scullery when I saw the space Lauren Lothrop Caron of Studio Laloc designed in her own home. (Perhaps I was late to the party, but better late than never!). Since then, I’ve seen these prep kitchens explode in popularity, which seem to have reached a fever pitch recently. For anyone not familiar with the term, a scullery was essentially a kitchen behind the main kitchen used to prep food and wash dirty dishes. There were maids who specifically tended to that space. Most of us wash our own dishes now, but more and more homes have been converting pantries, powder bathrooms, and even back patio spaces (like Caron did), to create the utility space.

The one above is technically not a scullery but rather a “flower room” from the Pasadena Showcase House, but functionally speaking, it’s essentially a (beautiful) scullery.

#9: Warm Scandinavian Modern Cabinetry

So far, we’ve seen a lot of traditional kitchens, heavy on the English design, but there’s another region making some (quiet luxury) noise in the space. Modern Scandinavian kitchens, particularly with this type of hardware-less drawer and door design seen above by Norm Architects, are everywhere right now. I think they’re an answer to the desire for something clean and contemporary that doesn’t feel sterile and unwelcoming.

And finally, in the home stretch of all the beauty shared here today is the last trend: the eat-in kitchen. I grew up with an eat-in kitchen, where we ate all of our meals together as a family (the dining room had a formal table in it but was more a showpiece than an eating space). I’ve noticed an onslaught of kitchen rooms that skipped the coveted island in place of a large table and chairs that seem to have a life beyond the more quaint breakfast nook. It’s rustic, communal and functional, as the table can surely operate as a work and prep surface as well, especially with a marble top like in this kitchen by Parsnip Design.

Gretch here, signing on to give you a project update! A few weeks ago we kicked off a new design coaching series and introduced you to our starting line-up (Chrissy & Pete). If this doesn’t ring a bell, hop on over to the intro post where we break it all down. But for a quick memory-jogger, Chrissy and Pete are renovating their builder-grade kitchen, all while juggling a tricky layout, tight budget, tighter timeline, and oh yeah, three kids under three!

Since our last post, Chrissy and Pete have officially finalized their layout, purchasing all of their IKEA cabinetry, and have even begun some light demolition to get things rolling. It’s all happening!

Many of you shared some great layout suggestions on the last post, and we think you’ll be pleased to see where C+P landed. A few of you also asked for some floor plans of the space to better understand the layout and the vision. So let us deliver! As a refresher, here’s where we last left off with the kitchen:

Their biggest concern was the lack of storage space and the need to adjust the dysfunctional layout, considering how the new one should connect with the rest of the open floor plan. And that weird, angled ’90s island? Yeah, it just all needed a refresh.

Picture yourself standing where it says “Old Floor Plan”, looking into the kitchen from the dining/living areas (like the shot above). Straight back is a hallway that leads to their garage, with a very small powder bath to the right and a laundry closet to the left. The angled wall opens up to a den, and the hallway next to that loops around the stairs and back over to the living/dining. There’s a small wall across the island with a pantry door to access storage under the stairs.

In the new layout, everything is much more streamlined. The main wall of cabinets to the left straightens out, with the bathroom wall bumping out about a foot to sit in line with the short wall across it (adding more space to the tiny powder bath–WIN). The window is replaced and centered on the new sink, and the island is updated to a better shape with more storage and shifted to be more central in the room. The biggest change happens at the old pantry wall, where Chrissy and Pete have decided to put their fridge and oven/microwave, moving the access door to the hallway.

On our recent drop-in, we were pleased to see that Pete had already made some demolition headway, removing the pantry door and walling it off to prepare for the incoming cabinetry. While there, Emily also had a chance to help…hold their littlest, Birdie (sound familiar??) while we talked about next steps. With 3 under 3, someone has to hold the baby while someone else holds the hammer–and Em will always volunteer 🙂

Pete also knocked out a new entrance to the pantry space, and Chrissy found an inexpensive place in town that will customize a reclaimed door to fit the new angled opening in the hallway. For now, this will stay as their pantry space, but they have ideas about turning the laundry closet into a more robust pantry zone once they eventually shift the laundry room upstairs (but one remodel at a time).

This is their new kitchen taking shape in IKEA’s space planning tool. I added the openings to the garage hallway and den in the back, but hopefully you get the gist! Yes, they’ve purchased all the cabinets, and no, there are no uppers going on the main wall.

Changing up our viewing orientation 90 degrees counter-clockwise, here’s the current view of the “main wall” of cabinets. The new cabinets will still cap off where the ceiling height changes as you step into the dining/living areas.

The New Kitchen Layout

And here’s that new floor plan view, this time with labels! There’s room for all the necessary appliances, plenty of counter space, and the flow just feels SO MUCH better.

The Kitchen Island

This is the back side and cooktop side of their new island, where Chrissy has also started playing with hardware. As you can see, tons of storage! She is still planning for an overhang on the short end of the island near the garage entrance for a couple of barstools.

These are the elevations for the new “main kitchen wall” and what was once the “pantry wall” but is now the “fridge and oven wall”. Again, tons of thoughtfully planned storage and some panel-ready appliances on the main wall. Unfortunately, the panel-ready fridge IKEA sells felt way too small for their family, so they opted for a larger, stainless steel French door model instead. This was part of the reason they wanted to give the fridge/oven space its own wall, so the main wall could stay more of a feature.

And here’s that feature wall digitally imagined–Chrissy spent some time mocking up how she envisions this area, complete with floating shelves and some drop-dead gorgeous zellige tile from Ann Sacks. We love it! This isn’t exactly final–the tile may not be within their budget, and the shelves are a bit TBD (two shelves? three? how long? store-bought or custom?). But how awesome is that tile layout?

Here, Emily and Chrissy are looking at some samples. Chrissy fell in love with the Pearl Gray Idris Field tile, and is going to try and find a way to make it work. We don’t blame her. It’s awesome.

At first, we were a little worried it might feel too dark with the already dark blue IKEA cabinets, but seeing the samples in person changed our minds. The tile is lighter than we were expecting, but still so rich in color, and the finish reflects the light really well. If they can squeeze it out of their budget, it’s going to be so awesome!

One thing they did already squeeze out of the budget was this stone. A beautiful quartz slab, “Enigma”.

So, countertops? Check. Cabinets? Double check (they’re all on site, and next up after a much larger round of demo). Pete has big tear-down plans to keep the project rolling. We’re excited to check back soon to see how they’re faring. It can be tricky to find “the right time” to demolish such a functional part of your home, especially with three little ones, but they intend to move FAST! And we believe in them!

Other design thoughts on the horizon involve hardware, fixtures, and lighting. Chrissy is leaning toward the Archie line from Rejuvenation in polished nickel. She’s also picked out a beautiful sink and faucet from Kohler–the ever-so-functional Riverby and beautiful Edalyn. The lighting is proving to be tricky and expensive. These can lights are just not cutting it, but swapping them for flush mounts will quickly add up. Chrissy is shopping around for better options, but is coming to terms with the lighting not being perfect if it means her tile backsplash could be.

And if you’ve been following along since the first post, you’ll know that a dining banquette is still on the table! Pun intended. For now, Chrissy and Pete are really dedicating their attention to the kitchen area first, but still have big banquette plans once phase one is complete. So stay tuned for that and many more fun updates to follow! Personally, I can’t wait to see it all gutted real soon.

Oh boy, this is fun. I love inserting myself into other people’s problems (usually when asked) so this whole “help someone else design their house” thing is already making my dopamine spike. After sifting through countless submissions (sooo many good ones–thank you to all who applied!), battling weeks of email hacking snafus, and balancing our super stacked schedule, we FINALLY found our match. You can read about this sweet couple here!

To refresh your memory Chrissy and Peter, our first participants in the Renovation Coach series, have 3 kids under the age of 3, really good taste, and enough experience with remodeling to not hire a contractor. And yet, like all of us, doing it alone feels daunting and scary (because it simply is the nature of the beast).

About The House

The house was built in the 90s and has an addition and some awkward angles and finishes for sure. But the neighborhood is great and the lot is HUGE. They want to change a lot about the house – adding a primary bedroom, moving the powder bath, adding a mudroom, moving the washer/dryer upstairs, and redoing the kitchen (maybe more, but that’s what came out of the 2-hour initial session). For our purposes, we are talking kitchen, but it was so good to know what else they were thinking – how long will this string be??

Back To The Kitchen (Pre-Move-In)

Here’s how it looked when they first moved in. From the drop ceiling to the weirdly shaped island to the unfortunate, immovable structural elements, the kitchen was not their fantasy – both in function and style. Their biggest complaint has been the lack of storage but truly it all needs updating–countertops, cabinets, appliances, flooring, you name it. The flow is a bit weird overall and they’re open to reimagining the space entirely. Oh, and the cabinets are falling apart. “BUILDER-GRADE” (she shakes her fists at the sky).

They’ve already made some killer changes, starting with the floor. They opted for this beautiful wide plank wood flooring, getting rid of the checkerboard, which only enhanced the datedness of the kitchen, but also opened up options. By changing the direction of the wood floors it also really helped to better connect the kitchen to the living areas. 

Here is what their kitchen looked like the day we stopped by to check it out. As you can see, they are mid-project and have been agonizing over the best solution for this space to keep moving forward. They’ve explored a number of layouts and have yet to land on the right one (her keynote collages look like mine – abundant and messy a la A Beautiful Mind. When we first got there she had a plan and two hours later we totally changed it (for the better, we think).

Chrissy’s First Mockup (Pre-Meeting)

Christy wanted to extend the size of the kitchen into the space next door (which seemed to be initially intended for a dining room). Desperate for storage and a nice big island for cooking and entertaining, they thought that this could be a good solution. I didn’t, TBH, especially because once you get into the space the biggest issue is two different ceiling levels.

The dropped and vaulted ceiling is really the culprit here. Well, actually it’s just a regular 8ft ceiling in the kitchen zone that feels like a dropped ceiling because the rest of the space is vaulted. But this cross section is definitely structural, holding up part of their kids’ room upstairs, so they have to find a way to work with it.

There were some other issues, as well that they wanted to address.

Speaking of structural, both the wall attached to the stairs and this diagonal corner wall connecting to their current washer/dryer closet, have to stay. In this back area is the entrance from their garage, a tight walk-thru, with laundry on one side (that they want to be moved upstairs) and a teeny tiny powder bath on the other. Ideally, they’d love to find a way to add a mudroom in this area…but one project at a time. My perspective was that all these little moves would end up costing $250k at least and not all of them were worth it. Moving a powder bath 5 feet could cost $25k (could also be less, but you just don’t know) so I advised against it unless they were 100% sure this was their “forever home”.

Stepping into the kitchen, this is your main view: a bank of tired cabinets, the sink, the dishwasher, and a view that overlooks the dogs’ potty zone. (Did I mention they have two cute pups?) The whole house actually gets really great light exposure from the many windows in the living room, and Chrissy hasn’t loved looking out into this area. They’ve discussed removing this window entirely (or maybe the one in the dining room) or just shifting it over to make room for their ideal cabinet layout. Regardless, they will put in new windows should they keep them here.

Plumbing will likely stay on this back wall to keep costs and complications down. But they want to shift the sink over, swapping it for a bigger/better one, then flanking it with a panel-ready dishwasher and trash drawer. And of course, all of this means new cabinets, countertops, hardware, appliances, etc. Again, here is their last mood board (which is rapidly changing, per the usual design process).

Chrissy has great taste and design eye – I loved her mockup. None of these elements are final except for the style/color of the cabinetry. The one thing they know for sure is that they love the AXSTAD blue kitchen cabinets from IKEA. The price is right and the look and color really speak to them. Us too. Initially, she wanted to extend the cabinetry all the way across, into the vaulted ceiling dining area, creating a bar zone and prep area with more storage. But she’s struggled with the right combination of cabinets that will align with that ceiling height jump in a visually pleasing way.

Additionally, they are losing the corner cabinets, instead shifting the oven zone in line with the back wall to create more of a galley-style kitchen. In order to make this work and look right, they will need to address this weird wall situation and plan to bump it out to make it flush with the walkway opening. Doing this will also add about a foot of space to the powder bath on the other side (another project they have plans for, but again, one thing at a time!).

Another part of Chrissy’s design (and we are definitely aligned here) is to keep the island. Well, this funky island will not be staying, but a new rectangular island will take its place. Again, one of their big issues is having enough storage, so prioritizing extra cabinetry here makes sense. They talked about keeping the stools where they are currently, but Gretchen had the idea to build in the overhang at the end of the island instead, near the garage entrance. Enough room for the kiddos to have a seat on a couple of stools while dad cooks, and plenty of room to stand and gather around the back of the island when entertaining–which they do a lot of–while maximizing storage along the backside. The cooktop would stay here (though at one point in our meeting, we discussed swapping it with the sink but that would likely be too much of a ha$$le).

Behind the island is their “pantry”, in quotes because it’s more of a Harry Potter closet than a pantry, positioned in the void under the stairs. In all of Chrissy’s plans, integrating a new pantry cabinet was a staple of her design. If you scroll back up to her mockup, she originally envisioned it next to the paneled fridge, likely coming out past the 8ft ceiling divide. The problem then became making it look right with the vaulted ceiling. Would it come up past the 8ft and intersect with the vault? Or stay the same height? Does IKEA even make cabinets to fit a situation like this? And how would this all shake out measurement-wise?

Well, Gretch suggested instead turning the original stair/pantry wall into a grand wall of floor-to-ceiling-pantry cabinets, closing off the existing door, and moving its access to the side hallway with some clever angled doors or drawers. Both Chrissy and Peter perked up at this. Of course, it will all have to make sense dimensionally and could be impacted based on the size of the new island. And it means more projects. But it could be a very cool statement moment and would give the chef something more interesting to stare at than the current situation.

With more storage going in the island and the potential for a larger pantry area across it, the initial bar/cabinetry build-out into the living space now becomes less crucial. But the problem still remains. How do you integrate this living area with the kitchen so it feels cohesive and connected? Ending the cabinets in the same place as they are now might keep the kitchen feeling small. But extending it into a wet bar or just more counter space isn’t super functional if they also need this area to hold their dining table. Sure, it’d give them more storage but it’s unlikely they’d actually use it for prep space.

Our Solution?

So what if instead, it became a built-in dining banquette, flanked with cabinets and shelving? This might feel more visually intentional than closed-off cabinets and could address the ceiling shift in a way that makes sense–to us at least. Remember, Chrissy is not married to this window staying here, so a new window could shift around or it could leave altogether and make room for a matching bookcase to flank either side of the bench (with the window in the middle?). The bench (and the shelves) would provide even more storage, but could also turn this wall into a really beautiful, thoughtful focal point.

So that’s where we left them, with plenty of new ideas and potential solutions swirling. The biggest question now is how does this all fit together?? Does that wall really have the right length for a double oven, sink, trash drawer and dishwasher, drawers, panel-ready fridge, open shelving bookcase (that starts at exactly the right spot with the weird ceiling shift), plus a built-in dining bench? How big should the island be? Can a grand pantry wall fit into the mix?

Their Homework

We were so excited about the layout change, but Chrissy really needed to figure out math-wise if they could fit their appliances AND the cabinets in the same kitchen footprint, utilizing the island for the cooktop and knowing that we’d have more storage in the new pantry and the floor-to-ceiling library cabinet focal moment in the dining room. We can’t really do much until we know that the layout will work within the footprint (we all feel hopeful).

They have to do some homework to get all of those answers, so we’ll check back in with them soon. I also tasked them with taking an inventory of their kitchen things, what all they’ll need to store, and mapping it out based on the new proposed design — a practice we swear by! Maybe they’ll find they don’t have so much of a storage issue after all?

As I was writing this I realized that this is a LOT to try to understand without you being in the space. If you’ve made it this far you are as invested as we are. With 3 kids under three years old, attempting a kitchen remodel is a doozy (thus me wanting to help). They think they can get it done in under 3 months and I’m loving their enthusiasm. They aren’t hiring a GC and instead are going to hire subcontractors and manage the project themselves, which honestly I think will make it go faster if they are on top of it and certainly could save them some money. They have already started getting bids and making relationships with subs and honestly, we all know that no one can get shit done faster than a mom, so maybe the 3 kids under 3 years will actually prove to be the motivation to drive fast. Regardless, we are along for this ride and hoping to not just be a backseat driver. Next up is seeing the update on the layout with our new plan and then we’ll go shopping for tile and stone (assuming that we are good to use the IKEA kitchen).

Since this is the first time we are documenting someone else’s project (and not doing renderings, etc) let us know if you have suggestions on the rollout of this – it’s a lot of information to get so we’ll try to break it down so you can weigh in and also gleam any help for your own project. A couple of months ago we put out the call to find a reader (or apparently two, more on that later) to help coach through a remodel. It was extremely hard to choose the right family/project – I wanted to do all of them. Some were a full house “where do I start – it’s a gut job”, most were solid design challenges where I could feel the overwhelm come through the writing. I’m so sorry we couldn’t interview everyone (and in true Emily fashion I ended up choosing two – just NOT being able to choose). But like hiring a new team member, it really came down to chemistry, the potential for design, compatibility, and frankly our collective excitement level. IF this is a project that I am dedicating my team’s time to (through meetings and content creation, not design work) I wanted us all to really really enjoy it as much as possible. While this is “free” for them (we aren’t being paid by them) EHD isn’t paying for the renovation, so making sure that someone was serious about doing it and genuinely excited to do the work that it would take to do without relying on us was a key factor. After culling through them all it’s clear that there is a big hole in the market – that design coaches or consultants could be a real career for so many people who can’t afford the true luxury of hiring a designer and yet just want someone to help them through it to avoid massive pitfalls and wipe the tears. I know this is part of what The Expert is doing but it’s clear the need is really large. ANYWAY, that’s all to say that I’m excited to introduce to you our first family – Peter and Chrissy (+ their three young kiddos).

The application came from Peter on behalf of Chrissy – be prepared for this sweetness. Here is the letter he wrote:

“Emily/Gretchen/team!

Peter Cambor here. So nice to e-meet you and really excited about this post you and the potential of you assisting in our remodel! First of all, I am an actor/writer/director/producer/bit-of-everything that moved up to the Portland area a few years ago with my wife and now 3 kids (was only one kid when we moved in 2021 –  we now have 3 kids under 3.. Insanity! But the best kind!) So nice to e-meet you! 

Okay. Real talk. My wife, Chirssy, is an amazing human being, a full-time mom, a huge fan of your blog, and she has been doing design for, well, forever – She has done small projects for other people, but she mainly does improvements and designs to the house we are living in at any particular time. She sent me your blog post saying how cool she thought this would be, and I am totally on board, and well – I figured I would just apply before she got the chance! We have done a number of projects together on a few different houses that have had incredible transformations, and this house we just moved into has, well, a number of projects to be done (Work in progress, Emily. Work. In. Progress.) 

Side note: In some strange twist of fate, I have become Chrissy’s handyman/contractor over the last few years. This from man who didn’t own a drill – and now I am not too terrible at the remodel stuff (thanks YouTube!) So we do a lot of projects together. My ability is….let’s say I, too, am a work in progress – but I have learned a ton in the past few years…

Basically, our house in needs a lot of work, and Chrissy and I are sort of torn about how/what to do with it. We have been sort of chipping away at it, small project by small project, but the thing we would be bringing to you is our KITCHEN, which is, to put it lightly, a total disaster. It is a full-on 90s nightmare. For reals. It literally keeps Chrissy up at night. There are a lot of interesting challenges with the space, and we have a few game plans in place, but just don’t know which way to go with it. From what you said in your post, this might be a good fit for you and what you are trying to do.

We want to do this on a budget (we are pretty savvy – scratch that – CHRISSY is pretty savvy at doing things on a budget – I don’t have hard numbers in front of me but we do have a pathway to doing it around 20K – no joke – and I think we have good options to do it that way. There might be a bunch of different cool angles in which this could work for your format. 1. The Kitchen remodel itself obviously, 2. The fact that Chrissy is sort of looking for mentorship/guidance in design and building confidence 3. ME looking for mentorship guidance in my JV Contracting abilities, 4. The on-camera stuff is totally cool with us and we get it – photo or video –  I have done a lot of TV through the years as an actor… I do more behind-the-camera work now. Not sure how much of this is video or blog posts/photos. But all good either way.

Chrissy was really excited at the idea of this being something to do as she loves your blog/work – but also I think to build her confidence and sort of get her interior design juices going! She’s been such an amazing mother and gladly immersing herself in being a mom and just hasn’t had the time for the design stuff. But design is her happy place and she’s so good at it( I’m her biggest fan!) Anyway – she sent me this (your blog post) said she was into it, and, well I thought I’d just jump in and apply!

The effort put in here, the sweetness and enthusiasm were just infectious – while other people might prefer more cut-and-dry applications, getting to the point, etc, I’ve always hired or chosen projects/employees based on my excitement level (remember I’m an enneagram 7). Peter went on to show us the projects they’ve already done themselves – take a look:

What this shows is that they can execute a good design, that they understand the work that it might take, and that they appreciate good design. I was so impressed. Doing these projects with small kids means running around means they must love it. One of the things I feared with doing this “coaching” is that since I have no control over the timeline, budget, or design choices what if they don’t ever finish or it takes three years or god forbid our personalities don’t mesh then I’ve launched this thing that you guys get invested in and we don’t ever finish. So seeing what they have done before on their own, gave us hope.

So we jumped on a Zoom call and as predicted as so much fun. We found out that Peter is in the entertainment industry (I didn’t google or do any background checks, of course) and like us, they moved up from LA during COVID. So if you recognize him (I didn’t because I haven’t seen his shows but Jess did as soon as she saw the photo of them! Grace and Frankie and NCIS:LA anyone??) know that is NOT why they were chosen. Their application was just extremely compelling, their project was perfect, and our chemistry was immediate. So this is them:) We are so EXCITED and later this week we’ll show you all the ins and outs of their kitchen project. You can get a little sneak peek from the opener photos. xx
