This year I have two non-kid holiday parties to go to – like with other IRL grownup women, in stylish homes! I don’t think I’ve needed to dress up in anything beyond a holiday sweater since I lived in LA, and I miss it (we host 2-3 holiday parties/potlucks, but they are all in our home and with a ton of kids so more in the “ugly sweaters and slippers” realm which is fun in its own way). So yes, I get to dress up a bit, but I still need to be comfortable while sitting, and I still live in Portland (meaning, it’s inherently casual – no body-con sequin dresses needed). So in my attempt to be comfortable, casual, but cute in a slightly more cocktail attire way, I put together a few looks with “holiday-adjacent” clothes. Kaitlin wanted to shoot this with flash, like I’m at a party, which sounded fun to me, so you are about to see me fake drinking ginger beer by myself mid-laughter…I made some choices, folks!

Sweater | Skirt | Tights

This first one was Brian’s favorite – I hadn’t heard this level of outfit enthusiasm in a while (probably because I mostly wear sweatshirts and barrel pants). It’s definitely giving Martha in the 80s with the preppy sweater and bows (with the skin showing through the gaps). Then I paired it with a tiny pleated skirt that is so well-tailored in a plaid that feels really me. I suppose it’s my attempt towards the “Ralph Lauren Christmas,” but in a way that fits my style more. I bought the skirt and tights from Aritzia and am really loving the burgundy with the green/blue plaid. I bought the shoes from a consignment shop like 10 years ago, so sadly, I can’t link them. Oh, and I’m wearing a large in the sweater (the only size left at my local Target), which fits great as it’s pretty cropped.

Sweater | Skirt | Boots

This sweater is the softest of all of them, and I obviously like that the blue can be carried from fall through winter. The fair isle style of it gives “holiday,” for sure. But man is it comfortable, soft, and warm. 10/10. I paired it with a Sezane wool skirt and boots I’ve had for a few years (both still available). My concern here is if we have to remove our shoes (which is typical in Oregon homes). This outfit doesn’t work without the boots. Not sure what the current “house party” protocol is for shoes on/off…my feelings are that if it’s a casual party with a ton of kids, fine… shoes off – but if it’s any sort of adults-only dress-up party, shoes should be allowed, right?

Sweater | Pants

Another “conservative up top, a bit scandalous on the bottom” look. This cable knit puffed sleeve sweater has a really good cut – it’s wider at the bottom but still short, which is nice for the proportions (big puffed sleeves + long is just too much volume for me). I’ve had the pants for a while, and they are questionable for sure – super tight and flare-y at the bottom, so styling is key here to not look super cheesy.

I think this outfit could use a pop of burgundy – maybe a bow in my hair or shoes? But I felt good in it, the pants are splurgy (but are on sale right now!) and very flattering.

Cape | Skirt | Tights

Here she is, super sophisticated! A new company named Alice Walk reached out to send a few things with no obligation. Usually, I decline, not wanting more stuff I might not wear. But this cape is so beautiful that I wanted to see it in person – and it’s extremely well-made and pretty. It comes in a few solid colors as well, but of course, I was drawn to this pattern. It’s definitely splurgy (think Frank & Eileen vibes), but for someone with an office job that wants to impress, I think this is fantastic to wear around a city.

This is my first foray into the slip skirt (I know this trend has been around for a while, but this one stood out to me). It’s a gorgeous blue with black lace, and with the tights underneath, showed no bumps (this was my fear with these silk/satin slip dresses -they can show everything if not well made). I picked this up at Nordstrom, not realizing how expensive it is, but I know I’ll wear it as it’s easy to pair with sweaters for a pretty/sexy/sophisticated look.

I was so comfortable in this outfit and felt pulled together in a way that I usually am not. The cardigan (also from Alice Walk) is so pretty, soft, and well-made, with pretty horn buttons. I really liked this tonal look, with the burgundy tights giving it a bit of an edge.

Pearl Necklace | Gold Pendant Necklace

I think for the party, I would likely add more layered jewelry, but this felt like a solid holiday house party outfit that checks all the boxes while being so comfortable.

A fantastic burgundy cardigan that says holiday, without being bright red. I added a pop of black and white stripes, leather, and sheer black tights. BTW, I’m on a hair journey and trying not to get any highlights (it’s been a full year since I last did), so I’m doing just root touchups for now. I like being less bright blonde, but these photos are making me want to just get a few pops of brighter blonde around my face…

Sweater | Skirt | Tights | Belt | Boots

Another holiday adjacent sweater (fair isle) that is so comfy and easy to wear. I paired it with the J.Crew mini skirt, burgundy tights, and boots, but obviously so easy to dress down (leggings, denim, anything). I’m wearing an XS, so it’s pretty oversized. But super soft and lightweight – so easy to layer over or under.

Well, here we go…. Ready or not 🙂 Gifting season can begin today, and we are doing it differently this year in hopes of making all our shopping easier. My team and I worked tirelessly building a new feature on the site and curating what we think is simply the best stuff worth buying, owning, or giving. The Madewell darted barrel is excellent (size down and comes in a lot of different colors/fabrics now). Great if you are like me and don’t want crazy high-waisted (I find these the most flattering barrel pants on the market).

A few years ago, I discovered the joy of “the Thanksgiving dress.” What is a Thanksgiving dress, you may ask?? It’s a perfectly plaid/fall-patterned dress that’s extremely flowy and comfortable but still makes you feel cute (even when you’re sweaty from cooking all day and full from eating all day). I found an amazing one at J.Crew that a ton of you bought and loved a few years ago (it’s not available anymore, but here’s one on Poshmark for a lucky buyer). I still wear it almost every year, and I’m sure a lot of you do too! Also, it turns out that shockingly, most of the EHD have never truly dabbled in the Thanksgiving dress arts. So this year we thought – why not, follow my rules and see what Thanksgiving dresses are on the market this year that each of us likes?? Spoiler: we all found some good ones. Here are our rules for finding the perfect dress:

1. Flowy & comfy (ideally it’s breathable enough to cook in all day or to just stand around in your grandma’s 90-degree home)
2. Plaid/Fall Print/Fall colors (prints are generally more forgiving and fun to wear)
3. Bonus points if it has pockets!! (so you don’t have to lose your phone or whatnot while you’re walking around the kitchen! Not a “must have” but always a nice to have.)

I love Emerson Fry’s clothes a lot – very easy to wear, very well made, and the patterns are always excellent (cheaper versions try, but they really nail it). This one (I bought from Evereve) has covered buttons all the way down, a loose tie at the waist, slightly puffed sleeves, and a big chocolate brown floral pattern. All those together create a very flattering, comfy, drapey dress that is specifically great for Thanksgiving (but also just great for fall/winter wear). This is lightweight and just so drapey (it’s cotton). I also want to shout out THIS dress by them, which I have a summer version of, and still wear it all the time. It also drapes so well, is so flattering, while not being tight. I don’t need both, but I kinda want it, too, just because they are so dang easy to wear and feel cute in. I’m wearing a small in the brown, but if you are in between, size up. I have the medium in the Frances dress, and it still fits nicely (because it drapes so well).

Hello from my childhood home! Like Gretch, I come from an ultra-small family – just my mom and me! – So the concept of “Thanksgiving attire” is a bit foreign to me. But my boyfriend’s family is enormous, and I’m excited to have nabbed a $98 dress to wear to all of their celebrations this holiday season! I wasn’t familiar with Tuckernuck’s sizing – my 36F bust measurement, in particular, seemed better suited for the XL – but I found the Large to be a perfect fit. She’s roomy and spacious (read: you will be able to put away a massive meal), but the cut isn’t overwhelming or overpowering – they did a really nice job on draping the fabric to show a bit of your shape! It isn’t a total shapeless sack. I’m also partial to the Black Watch tartan pattern over a more traditional fall-toned plaid, because it feels like it has a bit more staying power throughout the winter months. Historically, I am not really a girl Thanksgiving outfit gal. DON’T TELL MALLORY! It’s nothing against the medium, but I usually throw on a fall sweater and jeans and call it a day. I also didn’t (the past tense here is important) ever really feel like the classic Thanksgiving dresses were my style. So when the idea for this post came up, I thought, “I probably won’t find anything I actually love, but I’ll see.” Well, turns out when you take an innocent peek inside the Sezane pop-up shop at the Grove, the most non-Thanksgiving dress person will have a change of heart. My plan was to pop in, get something I would likely return (because I knew it wouldn’t be cheap), but I really loved to honestly recommend, and call it a day. Well, the day was not called in the way I planned, and I walked out with this incredible dress AND a belt that I will not be returning.

This little number is so comfortable and lightweight! Perfect for a filling meal:) Plus, those sleeves are so dreamy and my favorite part. On the site, the model is wearing this dress sans belt and with slouchy boots. It’s incredibly cute on her, but I just felt for my 5’4″ frame, I wanted some shape…which is how I ended up with my newest favorite accessory…this patent leather mahogany belt. The styling is totally up to you, and obviously, the dress is a good amount longer when it hasn’t been belted and pulled up a little. I went for a size bigger on the belt than I’d ideally want for a waist belt because I also wanted to wear it with jeans. Buying a not cheap belt for one dress was not something I was going to do. I also half jokingly asked the very cool sales rep gal if belting dresses was super millennial, and she assured me that the look was back. I’ll just be sure to stay away from the super tight, wide elastic ones, and everything should be fine:) Oh, but I did go to my local shoe repair place to get a few more holes put in the belt so that I could have it tighter around my waist and bigger for my hips. It took 2 seconds for them to do. What I also love about this dress is that it feels fall but isn’t decidedly fall. The plums and pinks make it more than appropriate for winter and spring, too! For colder weather, just add tights and boots. I tried it on with my favorite plum colored flats, and now, I plan to be very happy and stylish for my California Thanksgiving dinner in this whole look.

I am not a huge Thanksgiving celebrator. I come from a Three Musketeer family, meaning it’s just me and my parents, and it’s pretty rare that we spend all day prepping a grandiose meal just for us. Our extended family lives too far away, none of us really like to cook, and it’s one of those holidays we historically don’t care much about dressing up for. Sorry ’bout it! The Raguses are about as casual as they come, making it an interesting challenge to find a dress that would (mostly) cross off Mal’s list while still feeling close enough to our family’s usual attire, which is sweatpants. The one I found ain’t fancy (but it ain’t sweatpants either) and I know I’ll wear it more for everyday. It’s this pretty mini shirt dress from Banana Republic Factory in Dark Oak. I like that it’s corduroy and collared, giving me that “Wait, is this just a flannel shirt with a skirt attached?” comfort feeling. I like the longer sleeves and where they hit on my arm. Also, how the skirt kicks out a bit lower on the body. It can be cinched in at the waist with the (dinky) tiebacks or can be worn totally loose to make room for seconds. But be warned, it might be giving “Cardboard Box”. It’s pretty darn comfy, easy to wear, and fairly inexpensive! And I think it looks cute enough to keep. The regular large fits me great. My one huge letdown? No pockets.

When I heard about Mallory’s Thanksgiving dress rules, I thought, “I’m not sure if that’s not happening for me.” Flowy and comfy – easy enough. Plaid or fall print? Maybe… I find that I have a slight aversion to most “fall” prints (or anything that’s not a stripe). And even if I found something that hit two of those requirements? No way it has pockets… Well, I saw this dress on the Free People site that I was super drawn to. A nice flowy shape with a little leg slit, a cute velvet detail/bow moment on the collar, and I was even having a hard time deciding between the two plaid color ways. So I popped by the FP store in Portland, and they had it in this red color. I would probably wear it to a family dinner as a “skirt” with an oversized sweater on top (see left photo), but I would also totally show off the velvet detail at a dinner party with friends or on a date and wear to with a cardigan (right). Also… you can imagine how proud I was when I discovered it has pockets! 3 for 3!

For the recent Holiday shoot (that was shot in early October) I struggled to find anything that read as “Christmas” but found a lot that felt “holiday adjacent” (i.e., festive, pops of red, or even just slightly more elevated than my usual denim/denim/scarf vibe). Here are some cute holiday outfits if you are starting to think about what to wear for Thanksgiving or the holiday season. I rarely dress up these days, opting for holiday sweaters over cocktail attire, but some of these feel more transitional and easier to throw on.

This dress is viral for a reason – it has these nice wide sleeves, pin tuck pleating around the waist, and pockets -i.e., it’s flattering and easy to wear. The plaid is what got me – so festive and fun (and can definitely be worn for multiple seasons).

This dress comes in a bunch of different colors and patterns (and even fabrics) because it’s so popular. If I still went to church (well, a church where you dress up), I would wear this for sure. I even dressed it down with a chambray shirt tied around my waist and ballet flats or samba sneakers for a more casual look. It’s just very easy to wear.

This fair isle sweater is pretty solid and while on the splurgier side (god, it feels like everything is more expensive right now), it is soft, easy to wear, and can go from fall through winter (not just “holiday”). But in great news, when we checked yesterday, it’s on sale! I love it because it’s classic and neutral (I LOVE a Christmas sweater, TBH, but really only wear the bright red ones for 6 weeks, so I like that this has more longevity). The jeans are the Bella Wide Leg from Quince that are pretty dang incredible (for $50!!!). I sized slightly down. The boots are Vince Camuto for anyone looking for a slightly western vibe.

Another pair of pants that is so popular they make it in soooo many different colors/styles – the Colette (from Anthro). But the ruffles are so dang fun (and they flow/drape in such a fun way). I joked that it’s about time your ankles had more fun – it really dances and hits your ankles when you walk (not typically a priority of mine, but I was delighted). The shirt is from Old Navy and a great menswear short/boxy look that I’ve been wearing a lot. Can’t stop wearing those mesh leopard ballet flats (Dolce Vita shoes really are so comfortable).

Sweatshirt | Skirt

This was SUCH a fun skirt to wear that could definitely be good for fall/harvest/Thanksgiving or Christmas. I paired it with this sweatshirt from Gap (it’s really good – drop shoulders, great color), but it would also look good with a T-shirt or white button-up (1/2 tucked in). Of course, you could dress it up as well, but it’s less my vibe.

Here I wore it with a burgundy cardigan, and I liked it, but it felt a bit less my style (a bit too prim and proper). I liked dressing it down with the casual sweatshirt above (but wish I had put on necklaces or a scarf). It’s a lot of fabric and lined really nicely (and has pockets!).

This skirt really surprised me – floral corduroy, pencil with enough stretch to be comfortable but still so flattering. It’s bold, for sure, but the floral is in such a pretty color palette. I paired it with my Frank & Eileen denim top (so thin, so easy to tuck in and layer, and yes, splurgy, but I’ve had it for 4 years and still wear it all the time).

Lastly, the satin PJs that everyone on set wanted (that I wore in the little reading nook below). If you are following my pajama journey (LOL), you probably know I like a thinner modal fabric over the satin-y feel (just a sleeping preference), but if you want something objectively cuter, these are great. My current favorites are from The Gap, but I also love J.Crew (both feel “barely there” while not getting tangled up with my legs, no cutting in, and still draping really nicely). I returned this set not because it wasn’t great, but I’m just very loyal to my matching sets.

The internet giveth, and the internet taketh away (mostly, my money and my inability to make confident, independent decisions). One minute, I’m innocently scrolling my Instagram feed. The next, I’ve convinced myself that a snail-based serum is the one thing standing between me and glowing skin. Or that I need a new perfume that smells like summer. Or that my whole personality might actually hinge on owning the perfect water bottle. (It’s kind of terrifying to imagine how many things in our homes have been dictated by an algorithm. Don’t think about it too much.) 

But you know what the craziest part is? Sometimes the algorithm’s right! Sometimes, its recommendations are actually worth the hype. That said, I’ve also fallen for stuff that now lives in a drawer, untouched, collecting dust and/or guilt – my goal here is to help you avoid making those same mistakes.

So today’s post isn’t a haul or a guide. It’s a reckoning: a review of the viral things I bought because the Internet wouldn’t shut up about them. Think of it like a Link Up, but one that also tells you what not to buy. We’re considering this as a new series (I just bought some pillow covers that I will happily talk smack about, if given the option…), so let us know what you think! Shall we?

Sambas

I don’t know if “the internet” made me buy these so much as, uh, every single person walking the streets of LA. I’ve had my Sambas for over a year and they’re a great daily sneaker that have since been put through the ringer – we’re talking sandy beach walks in coastal Oregon; muddy, lush rainforests of Tropical North Queensland; weekly 8 mile treks through the flea market.

The good news: other than their scraped soles and creased toes, they essentially look new. They come in a ton of colors. They’re on-trend enough to wear with pretty much anything. The bad news: I find Sambas to be an absolute pain – both literally and metaphorically – to break in. WHERE WAS THE DISCOURSE ABOUT THIS? No one warned me!!! But the pain was worth it in the end, and you can take my perfectly molded Sambas from my cold, dead hands.

Verdict: The internet is right about these.

TikTok’s Favorite Water Bottle

Oh man. I WANT TO LOVE HER, I DO. I grabbed this kettlebell-shaped replacement last December after leaving my go-to bottle on the other side of the world. I loved its irreverent shape; I loved that it came in a rainbow of punchy hues (I sprung for the above, but it was a tough choice!); I loved the built-in handle. Yet I’ve rarely used this bottle over the past 9 months for one reason alone: I do not want to be responsible for the twist-off lid.

I’m a woman who forgot she was carrying a 40 oz. bottle. I was schlepping two and a half pounds of water, and I just left it somewhere. Why did I think I’d be responsible enough to care for a tiny cap? I’m supposed to keep track of this tiny item every time I take a sip? NOT HAPPENING, SISTER. I should have just gotten another ThermoFlask, TBH.

Verdict: It’s a high-quality water bottle for those who don’t suffer from crippling ADHD.

A Clare V. Bag

I am here to report – with great regret – that Clare V.’s bags are, tragically, worth the price tag. There are many imitators out there (I own and love this knockoff crossbody, for example), but nothing compares to the texture, drape, and ease of a Clare V. piece. The bags have this natural, cool-girl slouchiness that other leather producers can’t imitate.

I grabbed the Petit Moyen as a birthday gift to myself in 2022 – it was a fraught decision, but I thought it was a bit more timeless than some of her trendier pieces – and it’s a joy to wear. Clare V.’s bags aren’t cheap, but they do live up to their hype.

Verdict: They’re even better IRL, somehow. Why was I cursed with expensive taste?

Snail Mucin

If you’re into skincare, I have little doubt that you’re familiar with COSRX’s viral Snail Mucin. It’s heralded as a secret moisturizing weapon – a key pre-moisturizer step that soothes angry skin, improves texture, and locks in moisture. For a while, I believed the hype! And then, I pulled the Snail Mucin from my routine, and…nothing changed. It wasn’t doing anything.

I swapped the essence for a cheaper moisturizing rice milk (!!!) recommended by my local Korean beauty store. And it makes a huge difference – prepping my skin with a few pumps of his milk keeps my moisturizer locked in for 48 hours! Snail Mucin could never. (I can’t believe I fell for it.)

Verdict: Overhyped! There’s better Korean beauty out there. (But it is also pretty novel and fun, so no one will fault you for adding it to your rotation.)

Le Bon Shoppe Socks

Earlier this year, the EHD team took a trip to The Carly, a fabulous boutique rental property in Oregon’s wine country. One morning, while making breakfast in our sweats, I glanced down at our feet – we were all wearing these socks from Le Bon Shoppe.

If you’re not familiar, Le Bon Shoppe is an LA-based brand that’s taken the world by storm over the past two years. And it’s well-deserved, because these are the best fashion socks I’ve ever worn. (The best cozy socks are fleece-lined from Columbia, obviously. But I live in LA where it’s 80 degrees in October, so fashion socks it is!) ANYWAY – these are light, cheery, and they wash up like a dream. I’ll never go back.

Verdict: These are the only socks I’ve worn for a year. The internet was spot on.

Dieux Eye Serum

Here’s a nice story: In my early 20s, I went to a (straight and male) friend’s apartment to watch The Bachelor. During a commercial break, he looked at my baby crow’s lines and told me that I should start Botox. MY STRAIGHT MALE FRIEND SAID THAT TO ME. I didn’t even know men were looking that closely!!!! It gave me a complex, and I’ve been obsessed with eye cream ever since.

This Auracle gel takes “eye cream” to the next level. It’s deeply rich, moisturizing, and so smoothing that I’ve started using it on my marionette lines. It doesn’t ball up, and it keeps the area moisturized ALL DAY. Dieux is a (relatively) new brand that found its home with the TikTok crowd, so let this be a formal stamp of approval from someone who’s tried more eye creams than I can remember.

Verdict: It’s so good, I forget that I’m insecure!

Bondi Beach Dry Shampoo

If you’re an avid reader, you know where I fall on this beauty influencer-beloved dry shampoo. THE HYPE IS REAL, thankfully. I swear on my life: this dry shampoo totally transformed my fine, thin, grease-prone hair. I used to wash my hair daily – now I can go FIVE DAYS between washes. (To be fair, my scalp feels kind of icky by that point – having clean hair just feels good! – but you’d visually never be able to guess that my hair had gone so long sans-wash.)

I love this dry shampoo so much that I have stashes on both coasts. I buy two at a time. If I were an Egyptian king, this would be entombed with me. If they ever stop selling it, I will buy out every bottle on eBay. AND it smells like Rosemary, if you’re into that.

Verdict: Everyone else in this category should give up. Nothing can compare to Bondi Boost.

Birkenstock Big Buckle Sandals

The call is coming from inside the house, folks – even I am susceptible to Emily Henderson’s #emfluence. She’s been wearing these big buckle sandals for years, and she’s had nothing but good things to say…so naturally, when my mom offered to buy me a pair of Birks as a thank-you gift earlier this summer, these were the ones I picked.

WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?! They’re so comfortable. They’re SO cute. The arch support is a godsend. And they’re Birkenstocks, so you know they’ll last forever (I’m still wearing my 20-year-old Boston clogs from high school!). So let this be a lesson to you (and me): Emily knows quality footwear.

Verdict: It wasn’t so much “the internet” as “my boss,” but these were worth every penny.

Vacation Sunscreen Perfume

For two summers, the ads for Vacation’s sunscreen-scented perfume have followed me around the internet. They’re on TikTok. They’re on Instagram. They were even here, on the blog, as I tried to write blog posts. This year, I caved.

And OH MAN, IT’S A GOOD ONE. I typically prefer super fresh scents (my go-to was previously Clean’s Warm Cotton, for those who want to smell like fresh laundry), but there’s something complex, nostalgic, and fun here. I’ve recently been pairing a spritz with my Santal-scented deodorant (it’s natural and aluminum-free, to boot!) and have literally never gotten more compliments about smelling good.

Verdict: The internet is correct about this solely because of the ego boost it’s given me.

The Madewell Bandana

For years, I have tried to be the cool, effortless type of woman who can tie a bandana around her neck. Here’s the honest truth: I don’t have the build for it. When a bandana hits this neck, my huge dome and tiny chin are accentuated, and I look like some sort of thumb, or like the girl with the green ribbon, or like the friendly worm from Richard Scarry’s Busy Town.

All that to say: most of my Madewell bandanas are worn in my hair or tied around the strap of a bag. And honestly…I think they’re a little too expensive to justify that use case. (Cotton bandanas are about $15, silk about $69. Pricey, no?) Instead, I’d suggest sourcing your bandanas at your local estate sale or thrift store. (I’ve found Hermes scarves at estate sales for less than the price of one Madewell bandana – you never know!)

Verdict: They’re cute; I’ve had several for over a decade. But if you can find better pricing elsewhere, take it!

Starface Pimple Patches

Okay, okay. I don’t want to say that the internet is wrong about the Starface patches, per se, but I’d argue that they are highly overrated. (it could also be argued that I am about 20 years removed from the target demographic, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.)

I’m thrilled that Starface has normalized acne treatments; I love seeing confident teens who no longer feel held back by unexpected breakouts. But I’m going to be honest with you: these just don’t work as well as the COSRX version (which makes sense, seeing as COSRX invented the entire “zit patch” category). If building community is the goal, it’s nice to be in the in crowd sometimes! – Starface patches are great. But if you’re trying to clear a zit the night before a big event, turn to something with more history.

Verdict: These are not intended for 34-year-old women.

At the end of the day, I don’t know if the internet is making me a better shopper or just a more suggestible one with extremely moisturized under-eyes. But I suppose that’s part of the charm of being influenced by your algorithm – it’s about finding the gems, making peace with the flops, and telling yourself that next time you won’t be seduced by good branding and one million glowing reviews. (You will. I will. It’s fine.)

Cozy season is upon us, with “sweater weather” certainly being my favorite top du jour (likely worn while eating a soup). I found a few sweaters that I love in different styles (for different occasions), but all to feel comfortable, and many are pretty affordable. We were out at the coast all week, and it is absolutely fall weather, in the best of ways. Here’s what I’m loving:

Polo-Inspired Fall Sweaters

I really slept on the Aritzia train for a long time. I found their stuff just more “professional” than I am (very cool suits) and a bit too 90s (I’m getting there). But when I shopped in person the other day, I found SO MANY things, far more than I needed. That sweater above came in a few colors, has an excellent drape (just falls in a really flattering way), and the shape is drop shoulder, boxy, and lands perfectly below the waist. Preppy and comfy. It’s also oversized, FYI.

Westley Cashmere Polo | 100% Organic Cropped Cotton Polo Sweater

The polo is an easy one to layer over as well, with the collar giving it more of a professional vibe. Jess bought the one on the right and was raving about how light and soft it is.

Old Navy had this excellent oversized cable knit sweater that can act as a jacket or be oversized over leggings. It’s long, very comfortable, and if I were to wear it out, I’d add a scarf around my neck or a hat to give it a punch of pattern.

This one is so chunky, so stylish, and fits great if you like boxy and wide (and not very long). The color is also excellent – not too orange (for fall) but still feels so seasonal. Warning that is pretty chunky, so great to wear on its own or layer for warmth under puffy parkas, but nothing too fitted or will add bulk/bunch up.

This one was snuck into my dressing room by the salesperson (which is typically not my favorite move), but I tried it on for fun and, well, she was right. I immediately came out and said, “I would never have really been drawn to this” (mostly because it’s splurgy at $168), but my gosh, I forget how soft cashmere is. And the fit is great. I usually think thin sweaters like this aren’t that flattering, showing all the bits and bra strap bobs underneath, but not this one. It just smooths over them while also being loose. Looks like I need to give cashmere another go? I’ve worn this a lot under blazers, jackets, and as my first layer, but it can also be layered over a tank (but not a t-shirt – I think it would bunch up too much).

This is another sweater that is FAR more comfortable than you’d think. It looks like it’s wool (and maybe it is), but it’s this crazy soft, fluffy blend that feels like you are wearing nothing, and yet is still so warm. Magic. It comes in burgundy and cream as well. The fair isle pattern is so classic, it’s thin enough to still layer well under coats (it looks chunky, but it’s medium weight and stretchy, so still easy to layer).

I think it’s safe to say that barn jackets are having a moment – I suppose they are western adjacent and full of utilitarian nostalgia. But we mostly love them because they are easy to throw on and wear, have mixed materials (usually denim or canvas with a different collar), and ample pockets. I found a few at the mall that I wanted to show you, as well as a couple of other fall jackets that are pretty dang great for the season. I tried them all on with my favorite Korkease fall boots and barrel jeans that I can’t seem to quit.

This jacket surprised me at $60 from Shopbop, and Kaitlin (our photographer who has decidedly cooler style than I do) bought it immediately. It’s a thicker cotton that is just so easy to throw on (which I have been doing for days), and I love that it’s a stripe (always). So many pockets, y’all.

Now it’s VERY oversized. I’m wearing an XS small, and it’s still big. We like this look (and it looks awesome with tall boots), but def size down even if you want oversized.

This Madewell jacket was hard to find, I think because it’s so popular, but I found it at Nordstroms. It’s pretty perfect.

It’s polished (we love the dark denim, contrasting thread, and brass buttons), and the trapeze-style back gives it a solidly not utilitarian vibe. I’m wearing a medium here, so I would size up (the small might have fit, but not in the way that I would have wanted a barn jacket to fit – you don’t want them to be fitted per se).

Now this one from Old Navy was excellent (Old Navy has always done utilitarian jackets so well – I have last year’s that I still wear frequently). They only had the XS small in store, and it fits, but I would definitely have gotten a small so I had more room to layer or just throw on more casually.

I love that this lady jacket is in a darker, bolder tone (versus the typical bright colors). It’s fitted, polished, and flattering – GREAT for a city job where you want to look good commuting to the office and yet still thin enough to keep it on inside.

Of course, I ended up keeping the most expensive one (from J.Crew – so hopefully on sale soon!). I have an event in Texas in October, and this has a matching skirt that is so cute, so as a set it’s pretty striking and yet simple.

I loved the boxy crop, the squared off pockets, and the trapeze back (very similar to Madewell’s, I just loved where it landed on me, better). The small is still pretty roomy, so I could layer on thinner sweatshirts.

This one mixes both canvas, cable knit, and denim – pretty dang cute. It’s really cropped and the color is perfect for fall (and looks great with all denim colors).

I tried really hard to tell myself I didn’t need this guy, but it’s just really, really good. I had found a Rag & Bone 1/2 trench at Nordstrom an hour before for like $450 and didn’t even let myself try it on, but honestly, this one is way better.

It’s structured without being stiff. I feel like you can throw it over any t-shirt and look pulled together, even professional. After we shot this, I found one from Tuckernuck, which I didn’t buy, but if you want a tan version, this one looks GREAT.

I’m not alone in my love of fall fashion – the ability to layer makes styling (and looking stylish) so much easier. I went to the mall for HOURS and shopped in stores I rarely go into. I tried it all on in search of what is really good out there and mostly affordable (knowing that word is different for everyone). Some of these are basics, others are part of trends that are honestly just really fun to play around with. Here are my new favorite fall outfits.

The only takeaway from our trip to New York was “everyone wears long shorts,” which I don’t think is just universally the best move, but still, I took note. I found these jorts from American Eagle, which I think are still really flattering, and by pairing them with these EXCELLENT boots, I felt like I found my version of this style that felt SO fall-appropriate (especially for early fall). The short trench jacket is a huge trend, and I saw $600 versions at Nordstroms that I liked, but didn’t get obviously, and so was extremely pleased when this one jumped out at Aritzia (which is still splurgy, but it has a ton of structure and the fabric feels strong – like it’s not going to wrinkle easily). It’s just so perfect for fall and spring.

The boots; I shopped long and hard, and ya’ll tall boots have gotten expensive – even Madewell’s are in the $350s. I was happy to find a couple of pairs that felt reasonable, but they are going to be an investment for real leather (although these Walmart ones look good). That’s all to say that I LOVE these Seychelles boots – the leather feels thick and high quality, the block heel is super classic (and still on trend), and it’s a great height and width. Easy to pair with skirts, over pants, and of course, with JORTS, should that be your thing. The belt is perfect (and as you’ll see, I wear it a lot now).

Here we go again with the long jean shorts and I think I cracked the code – I love the proportions of the perfect tall boots with these more cutoff baggy shorts, giving the perfect amount of leg. It looks cool, it feels cool, and I think it’s the perfect weight for the late summer/early fall weather. This sweater is chunky (but not crazy heavyweight), easy to wear, and has the cutest fall pattern. We were all obsessed with it during the shoot, and if I could only keep one sweater from today, it is 100% my favorite.

Welcome to the widest jeans that I actually really fell in love with. I didn’t know that American Eagle has a higher-end brand, which, of course, I was accidentally attracted to. Now, these are a statement for sure, but I loved that they fell straight down and didn’t puddle (I can do baggy, but I can’t do gumby). My old Korkease clogs are less available, but these versions are just as rad and comfortable. The sweater is fantastic and so affordable – covered buttons and all.

Madewell has three tops that I’m wearing the hell out of right now – fall colors, but in breezy fabrics, which is perfect for early fall (still warm up here for another month at least). This navy blue balloon shirt has great pleating details and white trim, but is just so easy to wear. And I guess I also paired it with Madewell’s jeans and flats (whoops, didn’t mean to make a whole Madewell outfit). I love the tone of red of the shoes – not bright red, which I find is just harder to make work.

The prettiest, chunkiest fall sweater in such a perfect color. I love the cable knit, obviously, and the drop sleeve. And cheers to these jeans that are a really great clean mid-tone denim color, with that sew-in big cuff (so it’s not going to lose its shape/style). My favorite boots for fall that I recently repurchased after Buttercup ate them last spring 🙂

The head-to-toe denim look is not one that I’m sick of yet – it just works and is so easy. I have an event in October in Texas, and I’m going to wear this – it feels polished but still stylish and current (and you can wear them separately, obviously). The over-the-knee boots were a splurge from 2-3 years ago (Sezane), and they are so classic, high quality, and stay up high (they don’t slouch). A splurge for sure, but on par with other leather thigh-high boots, and I find that they make an outfit when I wear them.

That sweater vest is so cute, in the effortless French fall way. You can wear it as a tank top too, which I think would be so cute for early fall. This denim skirt is from Old Navy, but honestly competes with the J.Crew one (that one has front pockets, of course). These boots are incredible – the pointed toe and lower heel feel really modern and polished.

I’ve worn this outfit no less than 6 times – it’s just really, really easy. Again, easy breezy top, more structured jeans (size down in these), and the ballet flats that I just can’t quit (so comfortable and easy to throw on – almost like flip flops).

Sweater (Small) | Jeans (Size 27 x 30) | Shoes (Size 7)

This sweater is CRAZY soft and fluffy. I loved the fall motif (and it comes in a few other colorways). Aritzia is on the splurgier side (similar to J.Crew), but if you are in the market for a great cozy fall sweater, this is awesome. The dad jeans aren’t for everyone, but if you like that slouchy, baggy vibe, these Levi’s are awesome.

Flannel (2 Extra Small) | Jeans (Size 27) | Boots (Size 7)

I have been wearing the same flannel from The Great for the last 5 years and was ready for a new one. There is a reason we wear them up here – cozy, warm, and yet not just a solid color. I love this one, but a warning, it is very oversized (I’m wearing a XXS). It’s menswear-inspired and could easily be a shacket, too. The western-inspired boots are about as “cowboy” as I get up here. These are fantastic.

I was so impressed with these jeans from J.Crew that fit like a GLOVE and made me feel great. They are high-waisted and wide-legged, but the front pockets really work! They look really great with heels (I’m wearing my clogs). The white button-up from Old Navy is awesome – boxy and wide, with menswear details that are chic and feel way more expensive. Clearly, I’m wearing the belt and scarf A LOT right now, which is making me really happy 🙂

Y’all, there is a lot of pickleball fashion out there, and I tried on all of it (including a million dresses that didn’t feel like “me” but were so cute). People are wearing it everywhere – less so in Portland, but when I was in New York and recently up in the San Juan Islands. I took note!! The skirt is having a moment, for sure, and while athleisure is changing a lot right now, I’m mostly interested in what I feel comfortable in that I’ll look forward to putting on my body. If I lived in LA, I’d likely go a little more fashion-forward because you wear your pickleball outfits around town afterwards, but here I’m less motivated to wear a whole curated outfit and instead like to look more casual.

That being said, that set above is SO CUTE with the shorts being something that I would wear often, and I’d separate the two easily, obviously.

The varsity trend is certainly still thriving – it’s so cute, but feels less me (I like the skirt so much in theory, but I prefer shorts on me :)). This skirt had a great waistband (wide and not too tight) and was generally really flirty and fun to wear. And those are my new favorite all-day, every-day Nike shoes. So comfortable, and I’m feeling this cross-trainer trend.

This was my favorite look for sure that felt the most “me” – the Nike skirt (with shorts underneath) was really comfortable and flattering (and still felt athletic, easy to move in with a really nice soft fabric). I liked that it wasn’t pleated (I think the pleats might be too preppy for my style?) and instead it’s a fit and flare. I’m wearing the matching bra here, which I LOVE, and most people would just flex the matching set. But I love throwing this muscle shirt over it (I want to buy this in a few colors) – it’s loose, a bit see-through, has a big open sleeve that feels edgy but with the modesty that I clearly prefer.

We all went wild over these shoes – Kaitlin even took them home for her birthday lol (and I’m likely going to re-buy them for me because seeing them here, I want them back and loved how they worked with the colors of the skirt).

This was me trying the butter yellow trend (they were out of the matching skirt in-store, so buy online if you want to go full butter). That jacket was a really cute cut and comes in a billion colors. The skirt I’m wearing is Fabletics, but their membership makes it a little hard to buy, so I’m also linking up Alo (I loved their black skirt slightly more, but didn’t shoot both and chose to feature this because it was more affordable). So if you have a subscription to Fabletics, great, but if not, the Alo skirt was extremely good. This look didn’t feel totally like me, but I liked all the pieces individually a lot.

I did make a couple of purchases from PE Nation, which is an athletic brand that I love for being more fashion-forward but still performance wear. I bought this leopard top with matching biker shorts – I wore the top during our 5-night cycling tour through the San Juans, which I have yet to tell you about, and it made me feel so good, stayed put, and I felt like me (but with padded shorts, lol). And no, you don’t wear those Nikes for pickleball, but they are rad and are great street shoes for fall.

While I’m not this preppy, everyone loved this skirt with the little slit. If I were going on a pickleball date, this might be the outfit 🙂 That workout T-shirt is excellent BTW for those of us who don’t love tiny tanks but don’t want to wear a baggy T-shirt all the time. It has a nice structure and a good cut.

Aerie has so many shorts that give “skirt” that are so affordable in a lot of different colors. If you want to dabble in the skirt but still have them be shorts, I loved these. Super soft, didn’t cut in at the waist (I was wearing a small, but the mediums fit, too, just longer).
